THESSALONIKI - Kathimerini reports that an appeals court prosecutor in Thessaloniki on Thursday recommended that a court order the arrest and detention of the city’s former mayor, Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, over the alleged embezzlement of social security contributions while he was in office.

Prosecutor Achilleas Zisis also recommended that the former deputy mayor for financial affairs, Michalis Zorpidis, also be arrested.

The two men deny they embezzled 51.3 million euros of municipality funds.
